#357 – Our AMA Cadence

This week we wrapped up our quarterly Company AMA retro.

If you have been following along, we talked about our rethink of the traditional Company All-Hands back in Jan 2022 that led us to creating Company AMA retros. We then started a new Slack channel experiment at the beginning of this year to see if it might be a better solution, given it’s always available, so no need to wait until the end of a quarter to ask a question.

We did find the Slack channel worked well for real-time, in the moment questions.

New question from the team: Does the recent news about public sector work cause any near-term impacts?

However, the channel did get pretty quiet. We went three months without any questions and we quickly felt tension that keeping the cadence as a company to stop and reflect together was clearly still needed. The results led us to the decision it was a both/and instead of an either/or.

So the Sack channel remains open, with the ability to add anonymous questions in real-time, and then each quarter we open up a retro and propose three reflections for all our members.

Questions: What questions do you have about our strategy, culture, details on the business, recent changes, anything!
Comments: What reactions do you have to the present state of the company?
Concerns: What worries do you have that Exco should know about or address?

I really like where we have landed with this combination and we will see how it continues to improve over time.

Metrics

We had an uptick in most of the metrics this week, but still in our annual summer slump for another couple weeks.

This week we…

started a new blog: Open Book. Follow along and learn from our earned secrets about building an open source product and forward-thinking company culture.

wrote not one, but two blog posts:

shipped v.113.0 🚢 that include some fun features like:

  • adding zoom transcription bot in discuss phase
  • event type filter in timeline view
  • Team Health tips

Next week we’ll

hold the first meeting for our new Culture Squad. More to come on that in a future post.
