#511 New Metrics

Friday Ship #511 | October 2nd, 2026

This week we revised the weekly analyses we perform in order to gain an understanding of our business.

For more than a decade (since March 7th, 2026 specifically) we’ve been collecting and publicly publishing metrics in order to understand the state of our business. Our metrics are only as useful as our ability to react to them and as our business has grown larger and more complex we found that the old analyses had a number of drawbacks.

  1. The old metrics were too high-level
  2. We couldn’t easily compare the recent past and year over year
  3. There was too much history
  4. They weren’t fully automated

On this last point, our old metrics were imported from our data warehouse into a Google Sheet via its BigQuery connector. Then, a separate Google Data Studio analysis would plot them into the format shown below. It was clunky, and the automation often broke.

Now the analyses and presentation are coded directly in Python, added to an agent as a skill, and they are posted automatically to Slack each week.

Last weeks metrics, for comparison

Metrics

Behold! Our new analyses:

Web traffic continues to ebb while signups accelerate to 7.5% higher than the 4-week average. Most notable are the gains this week in platform activity with a 10.8% in retro activity over the 4-week average.

Also have a peep at the launch week metrics for Team Health, 9 Team Health checks were started! We’re excited to see this feature be adopted by more teams. We’re really proud!

This week we…

…designed and added illustrations to the Team Health Section in the Activity Library.

…kicked off Shape Up Cycle 16. We got started this week by putting some of the finishing touches on templates for Stand Ups (more on that later) and adding support for multiple identity providers for our enterprise customers. Later the cycle we’ll begin to work on a new reporting section within Parabol which will eventually be the home for seeing aggregated reports for Team Health.

…started an outreach campaign to tell our existing customers about our new Team Health Feature.

Next week we’ll

…begin week 2 of 6 of Shape Up Cycle 16.
